Reclast is an intravenous infusion of zoledronic acid used to slow bone loss in postmenopausal women. It is a medical treatment that requires a consultation with one of our medical providers before it is given. The consultation ensures that Reclast is appropriate for your health history, bone density, and lab results.

What the Research Shows

A ten-year clinical study published in The New England Journal of Medicine followed more than one thousand early postmenopausal women between ages fifty and sixty. These women did not have osteoporosis some were beginning to lose bone density many had normal bone density..

Over the course of the study:

  • About eleven percent of the women who received placebo developed a new vertebral fracture.
  • About six percent of the women who received zoledronic acid developed a vertebral fracture.

In simple terms, the women who received treatment experienced about half the fracture rate of those who did not.

Why Bone Health Matters After 50

Bone density declines before menopause and typically drops more quickly afterward. Many fractures occur in women who do not yet meet the criteria for osteoporosis, which is why proactive bone health evaluations are important. A consultation helps determine whether Reclast is an option based on your own numbers, risk factors, and long-term goals.

Who Should Consider a Reclast Evaluation

You may want to schedule a consultation if you:

  • Are a woman in your fifties or early sixties
  • Have been told you have osteopenia (early bone loss) or have normal bone density
  • Have a family history of osteoporosis or fragility fractures
  • Are in natural or surgical menopause
  • Want to decrease your fracture risk and improve your long-term bone health

This visit does not commit you to receiving Reclast. It is an opportunity to understand your options with a medical provider.

What Happens During the Consultation

During your appointment your provider will:

  • Review your bone density scan, if available
  • Review recent lab results and order any labs that are needed
  • Discuss your medications, supplements, and medical history
  • Examine your risk factors and long-term health goals
  • Explain how Reclast works and what alternatives exist
  • Determine whether Reclast is appropriate based on your individual case

If Reclast is recommended, your provider will outline preparation instructions, the infusion process, and follow-up expectations.

What to Expect During the Infusion

If you proceed with Reclast after your evaluation:

  • The infusion is performed in-office
  • The visit typically takes 45 to 60 minutes
  • Most people return to normal activities the same day
  • Some individuals may feel mild, temporary flu-like symptoms within the first day or two
  • Your provider will give you specific instructions based on your medical profile

Safety and Requirements

Reclast is not suitable for everyone. Before treatment your provider will typically:

  • Review kidney function and other relevant labs
  • Confirm calcium and vitamin D status
  • Review medications and any recent or upcoming dental procedures
  • Evaluate your overall medical history

All individuals will be advised to take 5000 iu of vitamin D and 1200 mg of Calcium citrate supplements for two weeks before and 4 weeks  after the infusion.

Cost and Planning

Initial consultation is $125. Blood work is handled through your insurance. The infusion is $500.
