Are you tired of constantly shaving, waxing or plucking unwanted hair? Do you long for smoother skin without the hassle of tedious and irritating hair removal methods? Electrolysis might be your solution. This treatment offers permanent hair removal for various parts of the body so you can enjoy silky smooth, hair-free skin without the constant upkeep.

What Is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a hair removal method that applies an electric current to the hair follicle to damage it. This treatment permanently destroys the unwanted hair at the root, preventing further hair growth.

What Areas Can Electrolysis Remove Hair From?

Electrolysis can remove unwanted hair from nearly any area of the body, such as the:

  • Neck
  • Underarms
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Bikini line
  • Legs
  • Face, including the:
    • Upper lip
    • Chin
    • Jawline
    • Sideburns
    • Eyebrows

The treatment’s precise nature makes it suitable for both large and small areas of the face and body. The only hairs that cannot be treated with electrolysis are those growing out of a mole or mucous membrane, such as in the nasal passages and ears.

How to Prepare for Electrolysis

Adequately preparing for an electrolysis session can contribute to the success and comfort of your procedure. The following are general guidelines, but your electrolysis expert at Nouveau MedSpas will provide you with a detailed list of preparation and aftercare instructions.

What to do (and what not to do) leading up to your electrolysis treatment:

  • Do not wax, pluck, epilate or thread your hair for two to three weeks to avoid removing the hair from the follicle, which is the target of electrolysis.
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements for about a week (discuss this with
  • Allow your hair to grow to a visible length (about 2mm), which typically takes three to five days, so your practitioner can see the areas that need treatment.
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least 48 hours to minimize your skin’s sensitivity.
  • If you have had any changes in your health, medication or skin condition, be sure to inform your practitioner before the treatment.

What to do on the day of your treatment:

  • Gently cleanse the area to be treated to remove any makeup, lotions and oils.
  • Exfoliate the area, if possible, to help prevent clogged hair follicles.
  • Drink plenty of water; well-hydrated skin can make the treatment more effective and minimize potential discomfort.

What to Expect During Your Electrolysis Procedure

Your electrolysis session will typically involve the following steps:

  1. Cleansing the area to be treated
  2. Insertion of a very fine probe into the hair follicle
  3. Application of current that destroys the follicle
  4. Removal of hair with fine tweezers

How Long Does Electrolysis Treatment Take?

The duration of an electrolysis treatment is typically between 15 minutes and an hour, but this can vary greatly depending on several factors. Small areas like the upper lip or eyebrows may take only 15 to 30 minutes, but larger areas like the legs or back could take a couple of hours. Areas with dense or coarse hair may require more time compared to areas with thinner hair.

How Many Electrolysis Sessions Will I Need?

The exact number of sessions can vary widely among individuals, ranging from as few as five to as many as 15 or more. Each session is typically spaced a few weeks apart from the last.

The best way to get an accurate understanding of how many sessions you’ll need is to schedule a consultation with a professional at Nouveau MedSpas.

Why Are Multiple Sessions Needed?

Hair grows in different cycles, and not all hairs are in the same phase simultaneously. This is why electrolysis requires multiple sessions — to ensure that all hairs in the targeted area are treated while in the growth phase.

What to Expect After Electrolysis: Downtime and Aftercare

Recovery from electrolysis is generally smooth, with no downtime expected. Here’s some general information on what you can expect after your treatment and how to care for the treated area:

  • You can resume your daily activities immediately.
  • Your skin may be slightly red, which should subside within a day.
  • Patients with darker skin might have temporary dark spots that will fade.
  • Avoid makeup, sweating, swimming and direct sun exposure for at least 24 hours.
  • Do not wax, pluck, epilate or thread your hair between electrolysis sessions.

What Results Can I Expect From Electrolysis?

Right after a session, you’ll notice a reduction in the hairs treated, as the procedure removes hair in the growth phase. Over the next few weeks, some hairs may appear to grow back, but these are usually hairs that were in the dormant or transitional phase during treatment. They will be addressed in subsequent sessions. After completing a series of sessions, you’ll begin to see a more significant and lasting reduction in hair.

Full results will be noticeable once you complete your treatment series, after which you will no longer have hair growth in the area. This is when the true benefits of electrolysis become apparent.

The Only FDA-Approved Permanent Hair Removal Method

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved treatment specifically recognized for permanent hair removal. With this type of hair removal, you can look forward to lifelong results since the hair follicles treated are permanently damaged and cannot produce new hair.
