What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is one of the most popular and effective treatments for varicose and spider veins.* This non-surgical treatment uses injectable medicine to scar and collapse unsightly veins.* As a result, your blood will reroute through healthier veins that are not twisted and enlarged.* The collapsed vein will then be reabsorbed into local body tissue and will eventually fade.*

The procedure is quite comfortable and does not usually require anesthesia. Using a small needle, medication is injected directly into the varicose and/or spider veins. Depending on the size of the vein that is being treated, the medication used may be a liquid or foam variety. In some cases, ultrasound may be used to guide the needle to the proper location. Sclerotherapy causes the targeted veins to close.* The blood is then re-routed through healthy veins nearby.* Depending on how extensive the veins are, the procedure can last anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes. After the procedure is over, you will be able to resume most of your normal, every day activities.
What can I expect from the results?
You may be able to see results immediately, but the healing process can take time.* You will probably need several sclerotherapy sessions to achieve your desired results, though everyone is different.*
You will be asked to wear compression stockings for a brief period after treatments. If you have been given the foam variety, you may need to walk around for 30 minutes following the procedure. You should also avoid flying for a few days. You can return to work immediately after, but high-intensity workouts, saunas and hot baths should all be avoid for one week. There are no other restrictions on activity, but Dr. Rubin will discuss this with you further during your initial consultation.
